Your Nervous System Runs the Whole Show
Every move, every sensation, every quiet process your body manages without asking you, all of it travels one network. Here’s why it deserves your attention.
It's obvious that right now, without any effort at all, our heart is pumping, our lungs are trading air to oxygenate our cells, and our stomach and entire digestive system is working on our meal we had the day before. Our eyes are turning these little symbols or letters into meaning and so much more. You aren't consciously deciding what that is. It's just something your body and innate intelligence is doing without much effort at all. There is “something” greater coordinating the entire system that is our body and it never takes a day or night off.
That innate intelligence lives in your nervous system. The nervous system controls every single cell, tissue and organ in the body. It's the communication pathway that not only makes sense of life but also helps us function optimally. Every muscle, organ, and patch of skin has it. The nervous system stems from the brain, runs down the spinal cord, and goes out at every single level of the spine to communicate with the body and vice versa. The information travels up the spine about sensory input, temperature, pressure, stretching, pain, and even ecstasy + pleasure, and travels back down to the body with instructions, contract release, respond, feel, stay calm, fight, or flight, etc. The body is in constant conversation with itself.
Here's the part that makes chiropractors pay close attention to the spine. As we know, the spinal column is the main pathway between your brain and body. The vertebrae themselves act like a guard/armor against anything and everything that can impede on this nervous system. It protects the single most important part of the body. Without it, there is not channel of communication, life force, and expression.
It's a true work of art.
So, what does that actually mean?
Well, this is science, and it doesn't ask you to believe in something to know it's there. It just is.
The nervous system responds to how you live, when you sleep, and when you don't. It calms with movement, and tightens under pressure or stress.
When that channel is clear, the body and life reflect this to us in how much life we can experience per moment. Chiropractic care is one way we look after and protect the nervous system, keep it clear from miscommunication, and allow it to do what it's designed to do. A well adjusted spine is adaptable, mobile, and communicating properly. It's firing on all cylinders, so to say.
However, you are not a machine. And these parts of your body run by themselves. You are a magnificent being with an intelligence that runs itself whether you decide it will or not. And that is one of the great mysteries of all.
