The Intelligence You Didn’t Have to Learn
You have never once told your body how to heal a wound, and it does it anyway. Sit with that long enough and it changes how you see yourself.
Cut your hand. Do nothing, and within a few weeks the cut is healed. You didn’t close it consciously, it does it by itself. You couldn’t have if you tried; you don’t know the first thing about how skin knits itself back together and none of us do. Beyond the science, we don't actually know how the bleeding stops, how new tissue is brought to exactly the right place in exactly the right amount and then told, precisely, when to stop. Something in you knows, that's the great mystery of life. Something in you has always known, since before you were born, since before you had a single thought in your head. You are run, from the inside -> out, by an intelligence you did not install and cannot take credit for.
Chiropractic has a name for it: innate intelligence. The wisdom of the living body. Not a metaphor and not a mood, but the plain, staggering fact that a pile of matter is somehow organizing itself into you, moment by moment, and has been the whole time. Tens of trillions of cells, each one busy, none of them aware of the others, and out of all that chaos comes a single coordinated being who can fall in love and catch a ball and read this sentence. Nobody is conducting it from a podium. The music plays itself.
You are run, from the inside, by an intelligence you did not install and cannot take credit for.
The radical part
Here is what that fact asks of you, if you let it. It asks you to consider that you are not a broken machine waiting to be fixed from the outside. You are a self-organizing, self-healing, self-correcting expression of something that has kept life going for billions of years, and it is happening inside you right now, without asking permission. The fearful picture of the body, a fragile thing always one part away from failing, dependent on intervention just to keep running, is not what the evidence of your own healing suggests. Your baseline is not breakdown. Your baseline is a relentless drive toward life.
This is not religion, and it asks you to believe in nothing you can’t watch happen. You can watch it happen. Every scab, every mended bone, every fever that breaks, every meal turned silently into you, is the same intelligence showing its work. Call it whatever you want. The chiropractors who founded this profession called it innate intelligence and built an entire philosophy around a single act of respect: get out of its way. Keep the body’s lines of communication open, tend the structure that carries them, and trust the wisdom that was already there to do what it has always done.
A different kind of reverence
There is a quiet spirituality in that, if you want it. Not the kind with a building and a doctrine, but the kind you feel when you realize how little of your own aliveness you are actually responsible for. You did not earn your heartbeat. You do not maintain your breath. The vast, gorgeous machinery of being you runs on, gift and mystery, whether you notice or not. To care for your body, from this view, is not maintenance. It is reverence. It is cooperation with something far older and wiser than your opinions about it.
You are not a problem to be managed. You are a living expression of an intelligence that has never once stopped working on your behalf. The least any of us can do is stand in its way a little less.
